Plena: An Introduction and Demonstration

Come learn about Plena music. Plena is an Afro-Puerto Rican musical tradition born on the southern coast of Puerto Rico. Attendees will learn about the history, instrumentation, rhythmic patterns, and social importance of Plena music. This lecture and demonstration will be facilitated by Maurice "Tito" Sanabria and members of Kadencia!
Kadencia is a Richmond-based orchestra and small ensemble dedicated to preserving, promoting, and playing Afro-Puerto Rican music (Bomba and Plena). Kadencia is a Perkinson Center for the Arts and Education resident artist and a member of the Virginia Commission for the Arts' Performing Arts Touring Directory.
